Casement windows are those that crank open like a door, hinged on the side and swinging outward. People ask about them in Sarasota for two reasons: they seal tight, and they catch a breeze better than almost any other window. The real question isn’t whether PGT makes a good casement; it’s which one fits your house, because PGT builds them in four flavors, and the right pick comes down to two decisions. Here’s how we sort it out on actual projects.
What a casement window is good at
A casement is side-hinged and crank-operated, so it swings out and opens the full width of the frame. That gets you a few things a slider or single-hung can’t: full ventilation, since the whole opening clears; an unobstructed view, with no rail across the middle; and easy operation in tight or hard-to-reach spots, like over a kitchen sink or counter. When it’s closed, the sash pulls tight against the frame, which makes a casement one of the better-sealing windows against air and water.
They’re a strong choice for breezeways, kitchens, bedrooms that need an egress window, and any wall where you want light and air without a big visual interruption.
The two decisions that pick your casement
PGT’s casement lineup really comes down to a simple grid: impact or non-impact, and vinyl or aluminum. Get those two right and the model takes care of itself.
Impact or non-impact. In our Sarasota IZ3 wind zone, most openings need to be impact-rated or otherwise protected to meet code. An impact-rated casement uses laminated glass that’s tested to stand up to hurricane winds and wind-borne debris, so the opening is designed to stay sealed in a storm, no shutters to put up. A non-impact casement makes sense only when the opening is already protected another way that satisfies code, or where impact isn’t required. For most coastal Sarasota homes, impact is the safer default.
Vinyl or aluminum. Vinyl frames are multi-chambered, so they insulate better, which helps on a sun-facing wall, and they’re lower-maintenance. Aluminum frames are stronger and slimmer, handle larger sizes, and stand up well to salt, and they’re the call when you want the aluminum look or need to match other aluminum windows and doors. Vinyl leans toward energy and a residential feel; aluminum leans toward strength and a cleaner sightline.
Which PGT casement line fits your home
Put those two decisions together, and you land on one of four PGT lines:
- Impact and vinyl: the WinGuard Vinyl casement. For many coastal Sarasota homes, this is the natural default: impact protection plus vinyl insulation in a lower-maintenance frame.
- Impact and aluminum: the WinGuard Aluminum casement. The pick when you want impact protection in a strong aluminum frame, for larger openings, exposed coastal walls, or to match other aluminum WinGuard products.
- Non-impact and vinyl: the EnergyVue casement. An energy-focused vinyl option for when impact isn’t required and efficiency is the priority.
- Non-impact and aluminum: the ClassicVue Max casement. Heavy-duty aluminum built to resist salt, heat, and moisture, for when you want the aluminum look without an impact rating.
If hurricane protection matters, and on most of our projects it does, we usually start with PGT WinGuard’s impact windows and doors, either Vinyl or Aluminum, and choose between them on frame preference and the openings you’re matching. We’ll walk you through it for your specific walls. For the bigger picture on storm protection across the house, our hurricane windows and doors guide ties it together.
Energy: watch the SHGC
Casements seal well, which already helps, but in our climate, the number that moves the needle is SHGC, the solar heat gain coefficient, which measures how much of the sun’s heat the glass lets through. On a south or west-facing wall, a low SHGC does more for your comfort and your AC bill than almost anything else about the window. We spec a Low-E glass package tuned for Florida sun and aim for a low SHGC on the sun-facing exposures. If energy is high on your list, our energy-efficiency guide gets into the glass details, and that’s also where vinyl’s frame insulation can tip the decision.
How All Glass & Windows helps
We’ve installed PGT casements across the Sarasota area since 2009, on the islands, in Lakewood Ranch, and throughout the county. Our job is to help you make the two decisions above for each opening, impact rating, and frame material, then get the glass package right for the wall it sits on and the window set and sealed so it performs for years on the coast.
If you’d like to operate a casement before you decide, our showroom is set up for that. And if you have an existing casement that won’t crank smoothly or seal tightly, we handle repair, too, so replacement isn’t always the answer. Request a quote or come see them in person.
PGT Casement Window FAQs for Sarasota Homeowners
For most coastal homes we start with an impact-rated line, either WinGuard Vinyl or WinGuard Aluminum. Choose vinyl for better insulation and a lower-maintenance frame, or aluminum for strength, a slimmer sightline, and matching other aluminum windows and doors. We help you decide per opening.
Some lines are. The WinGuard Vinyl and WinGuard Aluminum casements are impact-rated, using laminated glass tested to stand up to hurricane winds and debris. The EnergyVue and ClassicVue Max casements are non-impact. In our IZ3 wind zone, openings generally need to be impact-rated or protected, which we confirm for your project.
Vinyl frames insulate better and are lower-maintenance, which helps on sun-facing walls. Aluminum frames are stronger and slimmer, handle larger sizes, and resist salt well. Vinyl leans toward energy and a residential feel; aluminum toward strength and a cleaner look.
When the opening is already protected in a way that meets code, or where impact isn’t required, and energy or budget is the priority. If impact protection matters for code, security, or insurance, an impact-rated line is the better choice.
Yes. Because the whole sash swings open, a casement clears the full opening, so it ventilates better than most window styles and seals tightly when closed. That makes it a strong choice for kitchens, bedrooms, and breezeways.
We do both. If a casement won’t crank smoothly, won’t seal, or has a failed hinge, repair is often the right call. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.
No. All Glass & Windows does not offer financing.
