Where your house sits changes what goes in the openings. Sarasota is in Florida’s windborne debris region. Replacement windows and doors are designed to the Florida Building Code’s wind requirements, and on older homes, replacing more than one quarter of the total glass area within 12 months means the new openings need protection (Florida Building Code, Existing Building, Section 707.4). It depends on the room and which way the breeze comes in, but some styles are built for airflow. Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outward, and PGT describes its WinGuard Vinyl casement as ideal for rooms where you want to clear out humidity quickly. Double hung windows let both sashes slide, which gives you two openings for better ventilation (see our single hung vs double hung guide). Awning windows are hinged at the top and open outward to keep rain out, and PGT notes they work well in higher spaces. We’ll look at your rooms and how they face, then recommend where each style fits.
