The word “impact” comes down to two things: the glass, and how the whole thing is tested.
Impact glass is laminated. Two plies of glass are bonded to an interlayer, typically PVB, so the panel behaves as a single piece. FEMA describes it plainly: ” Impact-resistant glass “is laminated with a thin film to keep the glass from shattering and is also sealed to its frame with structural adhesive, and FEMA calls laminated glass “the preferred glazing material for new construction.” On impact, the glass can still crack. What the interlayer does is hold the fragments together and resist penetration, which helps keep the opening intact against wind and debris. That’s why we never call it shatterproof. It’s laminated glass doing exactly what it’s designed to do.
The rating is based on testing the entire door as a system. Impact-rated doors are tested to ASTM E1886 (the test method, how the missile impact and cyclic pressure test is run) and ASTM E1996 (the specification, which sets the missile levels and pass or fail criteria). The large-missile level uses a nine-pound, two-by-four fired at the assembly, and after impact, the unit is subjected to cyclic wind-pressure loading to simulate a storm’s push and pull. The glass, frame, anchors, and installation all pass or fail together, which is why a good install matters as much as a good door.

Are French doors energy efficient?
They can be, and in Florida, the answer lives in the glass, not the swing. Two ratings tell you what you need to know.
SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) is the fraction of solar radiation a door admits, measured on a scale of 0 to 1. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat comes through. The U.S. Department of Energy puts it simply: “A product with a low SHGC rating is more effective at reducing cooling loads during the summer by blocking heat gain from the sun,” and “Low SHGCs reduce heat gain in warm climates.” That’s why we lead with SHGC here. Florida is cooling-dominated. You’re fighting heat coming in far more than heat leaking out, so SHGC is the number that matters most. For sun-facing exposures we point people toward an SHGC around 0.25 or lower.
U-factor is the second number. It’s the rate at which the door transmits non-solar, conductive heat flow, and lower is more efficient. It matters, it just doesn’t lead the way it would up north.
